Epsom Downs Racecourse is one of the most famous and prestigious horse racing venues in the world. It is located in Epsom, Surrey, England, and is home to the Epsom Derby, one of the five British Classics and the most famous flat horse race in the world.
In addition to the Derby, Epsom Downs Racecourse also hosts a number of other important flat racing events throughout the year, including the Oaks, the Coronation Cup, and the Eclipse Stakes.
Epsom Downs Racecourse is a unique track, with a challenging layout that includes a steep uphill climb and a sharp turn known as Tattenham Corner. This makes it a true test of stamina and horsemanship, and the Derby is widely regarded as the ultimate test of a three-year-old racehorse.
Left handed, undulating. A 'U' shaped course, which, due to its bends, camber and pronounced downhill gradients, very much favours the handy type. Races up to eight and a half furlongs are very sharp, meaning those ridden prominently hold an advantage. The five-furlong course is fastest in the world, downhill virtually throughout, and as such an early prominent pitch is essential. In testing conditions, the runners tend to switch towards the stands-side rail for the better ground.
