Horse Racing - Flat Courses - Goodwood

Goodwood is famous for its annual Glorious Goodwood meeting in late July and early August, which is one of the highlights of the British flat racing calendar. The meeting features three of the UK's 36 annual Group 1 flat races: the Sussex Stakes, the Goodwood Cup, and the Nassau Stakes.

The racecourse is also home to a number of other important flat racing events throughout the year, including the Stewards' Cup, the Lennox Stakes, and the Gordon Stakes.

Goodwood is known for its beautiful setting, with views of the Sussex Downs and the Trundle Iron Age hill fort. The racecourse is also known for its excellent facilities, including a number of restaurants, bars, and betting rings.

Characteristics

Right handed. There are two bends; all races up to a mile and a quarter use the lower bend, and in excess of eleven furlongs use the top bend. Although there is a five-furlong run-in from the top bend, the turns and the pronounced downhill gradients make Goodwood essentially a sharp track, favouring handy types, particularly in the shorter-distance races. The five-furlong course is one of the fastest in the country, meaning speedy sorts often have an advantage. A notoriously tricky course, those held up regularly meeting trouble in the straight, particularly when kept to the rail.
